Awareness Raising and Capacity building activities against human trafficking and migrant smuggling during the COVID-19 pandemic: Lessons from Nicaragua

IOM Nicaragua adapted its intervention activities against human trafficking and migrant smuggling to the new trends of the crime provoke by the negative effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The mission also expanded its response and adapted the training modalities.

Beneficiaries

Implementing partners, civil society, returning migrants, stranded migrants, and extra-regional migrants in Nicaragua. 

Main Actions
  • Adapting the courses to the new trends of human trafficking and migrant smuggling.
  • Proactive response to digital and technological gaps:
  • Acquiring mobile data packages for the students
  • Conducting synchronous sessions to instruct beneficiaries on the use of the platforms.
  • Conducted an assessment to adapt the exiting awareness raising campaign.
  • Delivery of kits containing health products to groups of returning migrants, migrants in transit and implementation partners.
Recommendations
  • Preparing referral protocols for possible survivors, when conducting online settings.
  • Adapting the trainings, communication campaigns and other activities conducted in online setting to the less common internet traffic hours.
  • Updating the information to the scenarios caused by the COVID-19 to provide a more efficient response.
