Capacity Building on COVID-19 Prevention

IOM Guatemala conducted various capacity-building activities in collective center settings targeting returned migrants related to COVID-19 spread and prevention. This included ensuring the treatment of migrants in government facilities (collective quarantine centers) was in line with proper human rights approaches.

Beneficiaries

Returned migrants in quarantine collective centers in Guatemala.

Main Actions
  • Training sessions for migrants on the following topics:
  • Protection Measures
  • Infection Means
  • Effective Handwashing
  • Correct Usage of Masks / Face Coverings
  • Capacity building for the staff center on human rights.
  • Hygiene kit distribution.
Recommendations
  • Interventions like this should be coupled with a strong reintegration and socio-economic component.
  • Institutional partnerships must be secured in order to expand support to beneficiaries.
  • Admission to collective center must be followed by the delivery of kits containing basic materials.
  • Proximity between beneficiaries and law enforcement agents should be discouraged, as friendship could be used as a pretext to dodge established rules.
  • Clear hygiene protocols and referral of health cases must be available, particularly in the presence of a viral outbreak.
