COVID-19 Response & Socio-Economic Assistance: Lessons from Guatemala

SINAREM / OportuGuate is a system and application developed by IOM Guatemala that connects returnee migrants in search of work with potential private sector employers, as well as opportunities for entrepreneurship and skills certification. The instrument aims to facilitate the economic and labor reintegration of migrants returned by governments by speeding up the search for employment, entrepreneurship and certification and disseminating these opportunities among migrant groups.

Main Actions
  • Developing partnerships within the intersectoral platform Guate te Incluye.
  • Developing an App and platform with modules of:
    • Entrepreneurship, soft and technical skills, job opportunities board.
  • Training and donation of technological equipment to the staff of the migrant reception center.
Recommendations
  • Setting up a Wi-Fi connection and Digital Station in the Migrant Reception Center would facilitate and encourage the usage of the system.
  • Greater coordination with government partners (Ministry of Labor) and rewarding the private sector stakeholders to promote the use of OportuGuate/SINAREM. 
  • The App/Systems represent an opportunity to improve the data collection about economic reintegration, since it allows to understand the main search sectors and abilities migrants possess.
