Reintegration of returning migrant populations in El Salvador
Main Actions
- In response to the economic recession caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, IOM teams have strengthened assistance to promote self-employment through support for entrepreneurship for both returned migrants and the host population.
- To incorporate the gender perspective in the project's implementation, the team recommends identifying the gender gap, incorporating food security elements, care, and providing a basic digital basket to the participants.
- Incorporating the beneficiary population into the activities carried out by the team has presented difficulties due to the digital divide, the team has responded by alternating between virtual and in-person activities and has provided data packages to the participants.
Recommendations
- To provide continuity to the reintegration programs in a context of changing political scenarios, the team recommends working closely with the private sector and with local-level civil society organizations.
- When identifying successful reintegration processes, it is recommended to join and collaborate, instead of reinventing the wheel.
- IOM El Salvador teams recommend using IOM Reintegration Handbook as a guide to the design, implementation, and monitoring of reintegration assistance for returnees.
